WASHINGTON, DC — Iowa Congressman Tom Latham shares his family’s personal story of caring for his father as he gradually succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease on the latest edition of his public affairs program, The Congressional Report.

Viewers and listeners of the program, which features an informative discussion with three of the nation’s foremost experts on aging issues and Alzheimer’s disease, will learn that the Latham family’s experience is one that is common among an increasing number of Iowa families.

“Unfortunately, Congressman, your family experience is the experience of an increasing number of Americans,” said Dan Perry, the executive director of the not-for-profit Alliance for Aging Research, said on the show. “I’ve sometimes said that by the middle of this century, everyone is either going to have Alzheimer’s or be taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s.”

Dr. Molly Wagster, a leader at the National Institute on Aging (NIA), a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), talks with Latham about the latest research findings on cognitive aging and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Wagster and two colleagues also provide valuable information on how families can cope with the disease and spot warning signs in relatives who may be at risk for the disease.

The program on aging issues and Alzheimer’s disease is now running on Iowa cable systems, radio and television stations including every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on the Mediacom Connections Channel, which is channel 22 on the Mediacom Cable System in almost all of the State of Iowa. Iowans should contact local radio and broadcast television stations, or their local cable provider, for a schedule of broadcast dates and times of The Congressional Report in their area.

The program is also available for viewing, or listening/podcasting, online on Congressman Latham’s website at: www.tomlatham.house.gov. At the website, visitors can access the current version of The Congressional Report as well as all past episodes.
